Evil Eye (Nazar), Ahadith and Cure

What is Evil Eye?

In Islamic tradition, the "evil eye" is considered real. According to Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و سلم), the evil eye can come from two sources:

  1. From humans.

  2. From jinn.

Evil Eye from Humans: Many narrations confirm this. For example, Abu Huraira (radiallahu anhu) reported that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) instructed to seek protection from both the evil eye of people and jinn (At-Tirmidhi, 2058).

Evil Eye from Jinn: Umm Salamah (radiallahu anhaa) reported that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) saw a servant girl with a pale face and said, "Seek Ruqyah for her, for she has been affected by the evil eye" (Al-Bukhari, 5739). The term “As-sa-faa’ah” refers to the evil eye from jinn.

Causes of the Evil Eye: It often arises from envy, where someone wishes to prevent another person’s blessings, even if they don’t want those blessings for themselves. This envy is a result of hatred and anger (Fath Al-Haq Al-Mubeen, 219).

The evil eye is compared to an arrow or spear that leaves the envious person’s soul and targets the envied person. It may or may not affect the person, depending on the protective measures they take, such as recitations and seeking refuge. If it does not affect them, it might return to the envious person (The Medicine of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم), 138).

Key Points:

  • The evil eye only has effect by Allah’s will.

  • It can afflict someone even if the envier hasn’t seen them directly.

  • It can also be caused by admiration, not just envy.

  • Anyone, including loved ones or righteous individuals, can cause the evil eye.

Prevention and Protection:

  • Recite supplications and verses from the Quran to protect yourself from the evil eye.

  • Use the hijab as a means of protection, especially for women, as it helps shield against the evil eye by not revealing one’s beauty.

Symptoms of the Evil Eye:

  • Weakness or fatigue

  • Loss of appetite

  • Yellowing or discoloration of the face

  • Unexplained crying

  • Shaking or trembling

  • Chest tightness

  • Excessive yawning

  • Laziness and lack of energy

Treatment for the Evil Eye:

1. Preventive Measures:

  • Protect yourself and others by reciting Quranic verses and supplications.

  • When you see something you admire, pray for blessings: "This is what Allah wills. There is no power except with Allah. O Allah, bless it."

  • Guard anything or anyone that might attract envy by seeking protection from Allah and keeping their beauty or success private.

2. After Affliction:

  • If the source of the evil eye is known, ask them to perform ablution (wudu), and the afflicted person should bathe with that water (Sunan Abu Dawood 419).

May Allah grant you protection and good health. Ameen.
